This event explores concrete examples of how STEM faculty meaningfully embed Indigenous knowledge and voices into their courses and curricula. Eduardo Jovel will discuss how his teaching practices have been shaped by his experiences working with Indigenous communities. This includes making specific decisions about content, such as inviting Indigenous voices into the classroom, and using land-based pedagogies. It also involves adapting the classroom environment to encourage and value the perspectives of Indigenous students and community members. Pamela Rogalski will discuss a collaborative curriculum-level initiative in Applied Science that aims to transform the engineering culture and curriculum by increasing faculty members’ and students' abilities to engage with Indigenous content and work alongside Indigenous communities. Her presentation will highlight the core principles guiding this project, which is informed by the UBC Strategic Plan (UBC, 2018), the UNDRIP (United Nations, 2007), and Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation calls to action (TRC, 2015).
