The History of Skylight

We have worked with the UBC Science community and our campus partners since 2001, expanding the body of theoretical and practical knowledge about teaching science and math while helping tens of thousands of UBC undergraduates expand the depth and breadth of their learning and classroom experience.

2001

  • Skylight established
  • Supper Series established
  • Development Grants established

2004

  • First embedded expert hired in PHAS

2005

  • Embedded experts hired in BIOL, CHEM, and MATH

2007

  • Carl Wieman Science education Initiative Established at UBC

2009

  • Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative end-of-year event launched

2010

  • First permanent staff position created in Skylight

2011

  • Skylight and CTLT partner to hire a learning technology strategist for the Faculty of Science

2013

  • Skylight formally supports CWSEI with the addition of a dedicated staff member
  • Learning technology ecosystem support model implemented in partnership with CTLT
  • UBC Flexible Learning Initiative launched
  • BSc Degree Outcomes discussions begin

2014

  • Paired Teaching Initiative in PHAS and EOAS launched
  • Skylight joins the Bay View Alliance
  • CWSEI's activities merged with Skylight, Open House launched

2015

  • Skylight joins NSF-funded TRESTLE project

2016

  • Skylight Faculty Advisory Council established

2017

  • Skylight creates seven SES positions to support departmental strategic priorities

2018

  • Student Diversity Initiative launched
  • Data Science Curriculum project initiated with support from Skylight
  • Teaching Start-up Initiative began
